Washer Leaking or Won't Drain? What to Check First in a Harpers Ferry Laundry Room

Water on the laundry room floor, or a drum full of water that will not drain — both are washer problems that need attention fast, because water spreads. Here is what to check first in a Harpers Ferry laundry room, and when to call.
If the Washer Is Leaking: Stop the Water First
Before anything else, turn off the water supply taps behind the washer. That stops the leak at the source. Then switch the washer off at the wall if water is spreading near an outlet. Mop up what you can, and note where the water is coming from: the back, the front, the bottom, or the drain area. Where the water appears tells us where the fault is.
Check the Hoses
Most washer leaks start at the hoses. Look at the two supply hoses behind the machine — hot and cold — and the drain hose. Check for cracks, bulges, loose connections, and hoses that have come off their fittings. Supply hoses wear out over time, and a burst hose can flood a room in minutes. If a hose looks swollen, cracked, or wet at the connection, turn off the taps and call — do not just tighten it and hope.
Check the Door Seal (Front-Load)
On a front-load washer, the rubber door seal — the bellows — is a common leak point. Look for splits, tears, or mould damage, and check the bottom of the seal where water pools. A torn seal leaks every cycle, and it only gets worse. Small objects left in pockets — coins, screws, bra wires — are the usual cause of seal damage.
If the Washer Won't Drain: Check the Filter and Hose
A washer that will not drain usually leaves the drum full of water. Check the drain hose for kinks — a hose crushed behind the machine cannot drain. Then check the pump filter, usually behind a small flap at the front, low down: unscrew it slowly over a shallow tray, and clear out coins, lint, and debris. If the filter is clear, the hose is straight, and the drum is still full, the drain pump itself may have failed. Do not tip the machine — switch it off and call.
When to Call
Call when water is leaking from anywhere other than the drain hose, when the drum stays full after the filter and hose checks, when the pump makes no sound at all, or when the leak is spreading. Our washing machine repair in West Virginia covers Harpers Ferry from the Ranson hub, and our statewide appliance repair service throughout West Virginia takes the same calls across the Eastern Panhandle. Call (304) 459-8507 and describe where the water is — that tells us where the fault lives before we arrive.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first if my washer is leaking?
Turn off the water supply taps behind the washer, switch it off at the wall if water is near an outlet, and note where the water is coming from. Then call.
Why won't my washer drain?
The most common causes are a kinked drain hose, a clogged pump filter, or a failed drain pump. Check the hose and filter first.
Is a leaking washer dangerous?
Water near electrical outlets is. Turn off the taps and the power, and call promptly.
How much does washer repair cost?
National guides put most washing machine repairs in the $100–$400 range, with hoses and filters at the lower end and pump or motor work higher. We explain the cost after diagnosis.
